Using Left-Behind Items

When we moved in to out new place, the people who lived here before had left behind a bunch of things. We contacted them and asked if they wanted them. They said yes and then never came for them. Just before sukkos we called again and he said if he has not used it in the last three months then he does not want any of it. He said he would come and get rid of everything and I said we would just take care of it. We kept a few things that were not so significant some planters and some cleaning products. But they also left behind a kids bicycle in very good condition. Can we give that to our kids? Do we have to call again and ask him specifically about the bike?
Thank You,

Answer:

If the intention of the owner was that he no longer wants the things – as it seems to be – then there is no need to consult him about any particular item, including the bike.

However, if you are in doubt over the matter, you can always call and ask.
