Hearing Berachah on Fire and Besamim from Others

As a followup to this question- Should you also refrain from making your own bracha on besamim and fire during havdalah?

Answer:

Although the particular reasons of the cup of wine (as discussed previously) won’t apply here, it remains preferable to hear the berachah on the fire from the person making havdallah, and this is the express opinion of Beis Hillel in the Gemara in Berachos (53a).

The reason is that be-rov am hadras melech – it brings glory to the King that the berachah should be said communally.

For besamim there is a dispute among authorities over whether the rationale applies, as with all berachos over hana’ah (physical pleasures). Although the Maamar Mordechai writes that it does not apply, others opine that it does.

In the Havdallah ceremony, however, during which one usually fulfills all the berachos from the person making Havdallah, it is natural to fulfill even the berachah on the besamim from the same person, and it is correct to do so (based on Shulchan Aruch Ha-Rav 213:6).
