Tzedaka from a non-Jew

Question:

We have a question about the halachic ramifications of approaching the non-Jew, who was left the bulk of our brother’s zl estate to ask him to give tzedaka as a zchus for our brother z l. I was speaking with my brother who wanted to write to the non-Jew about the possibility. But I have some reservations among them, not creating any chillul Hashem, giving a non-Jew a ” zechus”, as well as not knowing if spiritually speaking any zechus would actually accrue to our brother zl through such an act done not by a Jew. This besides the fact that I don’t think he would actually understand the Torah mindset at all, and might misunderstand the request in a bad way thus potentially being a chilul Hashem.
Any advice or thoughts on this would be appreciated, at your convenience.

Answer:

Hello,

Halachically it is not a problem for you to approach the Non-Jew to ask him to give some charity in the memory of the person who gave him this large sum of money. It is not being done as a zechus for the gentile, rather as a zechus for the departed soul. Additionally, it is considered partially recouping the money that was given to him. Additionally, it is not considered a chillul Hashem, since it isn’t being done publicly, and you aren’t asking him for a personal handout, rather you are asking him to donate it to an organization.

Exactly how to word this, in a way that the gentile will be willing to do this, may be tricky. You can try explaining to him that according to the Jewish religion the soul of a person benefits tremendously in paradise, when money is given to poor people in his merit. Also don’t ask for too much…

Hashem should give you siyata dishmaya.

Best wishes
