God’s Names; The Power to Bless and Curse

Thanks for the opportunity to ask and receive an answer (I cannot afford kabbala teaching in Sydney). I’m interested in the powerful method of Jewish teaching.
Why does God have so many names? What does he want to do with them? How do human-beings have the power to curse or bless someone to misfortunate ,or fortune and success. I’ve been cursed and I’m still suffering as a innocent woman, so is God really crippled ,can’t save human-beings? I can’t see it clearly, after extensive studies in many religions I am still searching for answers.
Thanks rabbbi.

Answer:

These questions involve deep concepts, and it is difficult to answer them in this forum. I will try to address them briefly.

1. The many Names of God refer to different manifestations/revelations of God to His creatures. The starting point is that without God revealing Himself to us, we would have no knowledge of Him, for we are creatures in a created world, and He is the Creator. However, God wishes us to have a relationship with Him, and therefore revealed Himself by means of His Names, each Name corresponding to a specific Divine attribute with which God acts towards humanity. For instance, the Name E-l corresponds to the attribute of Divine giving and kindness, whereas the Name Elo-him corresponds to Divine judgment. Each Name thus refers to a specific revelation of God, revelations that are inherent to our relationship with Him, and to our obligation to emulate His ways.

2. Human beings are created in the Image of God. As such, they have a unique power, and they are even able to influence others with this power. However, this does not mean that human beings are able to wreak havoc upon the world at will. God oversees the actions of man, and somehow ensures that the Divine plan for the world, which leads us from creation through to the final destiny of the world, always continues on. How the Divine plan for the world goes together with the ability of humankind to choose between good and evil, and to wield power over others, is one of the great secrets of the world.

3. Therefore, G-d is not crippled. Although He has given power to humankind, He monitors, supervises, and guides the world according to the great master-plan that embraces — again, in a manner that is hidden to us — all of history. This includes the all-embracing history of the world, the history of nations, and even the personal course and history of each individual, although in an individual sense, those with a “closer” relationship to God will merit closer personal guidance and supervision.

If you feel that you have been cursed, focus on your relationship with God. Address Him, pray to Him, and feel that He is an integral part of your life.

I’m sorry that in this forum, I can’t expound beyond this short answer.

Blessings that you should find peace and contentment.
