I printed a picture in my yeshiva newsletter and the one who took the picture would like me to pay for his right to the picture
please let me know if i am mechuyav to pay or not, and if there is lifnim meshuras hadin to pay him anyway.
Answer:
If the picture was taken from a public forum, there is no need to pay. If, however, it was taken from a place that would normally charge for the service, there is a debate amongst contemporary Poskim whether one is considered a thief if one does not pay for the use of such a picture. At any rate, in such circumstances if you have benefitted financially from this it would be appropriate to offer some compensation.
