Budget for Salaries

Dear Rabbi,

I am involved in a business that can definitely pay salaries through June. After June, we don’t have a budget. We have possible opportunities that may provide enough income to pay employees, but nothing firm.

Under the circumstances, what, if anything, should this business communicate to its employees regarding this unclear future? If a communication to employees should be made, how long prior to June is it necessary?

Thank you,

A

Answer:

It is certainly proper to inform the potential employees of the uncertainty concerning future salaries. Many will be happy to accept the job for the meantime — better than nothing — but others might decide that they don’t want to get into uncertainties. They should be given the choice upfront, and the information required to make the decision.
