Found Shoe

I have a few questions:

1. We receive money every month from the Canadian government, but it’s only b/c they think we still live in Canada. Is this allowed?

2. We found a shoe (among other random items) in our chatzer. We put up signs for the shoe. What are we to do with it now? What about the other items?

3. My daughter came home with a glue stick that didn’t belong to her, and she doesn’t know who it belongs to. It is drying out and losing its “stickiness.” What do we do with it?

Thank you.

Answer:

1. It is not generally permitted to do this, but this can depend on personal circumstances. You can be in touch privately about the matter.

2. Keep the shoe for a while, until it is certain that the person who lost the shoe will have thrown away the one shoe in his possession. After this time, you can discard the shoe. A period of three months or so should be enough. The single shoe has no inherent value, so beyond this time there is no obligation to do anything.

3. The glue stick should be returned to the teacher, who can ask the girls and thereby try to find the owner.
