Preparations for Birth

If it’s permitted to prepare all needed staff for a newborn ahead of time? Some people say: it’s not good idea to prepare something before baby is born, but common sense tell us: to prepare a basic needed staff. What is right thing to do? Thanks.

Answer:

It is permitted to prepare all that is needed for a newborn ahead of his birth.

When a woman reaches the late stages of pregnancy, it is of course common sense to make preparations for the birth (the baby will need clothing, a crib, a room, and so on).

Some prefer not to make elaborate preparations (buying many clothes, and so on) until after the birth, for reasons of ayin hara.

However, there are no concrete halachic sources that raise this issue, and if you are not concerned for this it is fine. You should do whatever needs to be done or whatever you feel comfortable with.

Best wishes.
