Shalom Aleichem
I’d like to ask you about the process you’d suggest to ensure that our home is shaatnez-free. I don’t really know where to begin. I don’t know which items to check and which would take priority. I do not have the funds to have a shaatnez expert come and check all the relevant clothing, but neither can I ignore this severe issur.
Many thanks
Answer:
Most clothes do not require shatnez checking according to the strict halachah (according to the Mishkenos Yaakov, only clothes that have 10% occurrence of shatnez require checking; others rule that if finding shatnez will not be a “surprise” the clothes must be checked).
See Iggros Moshe (Yoreh De’ah 1:72), who rules that clothing of this type can be worn without checking, though they should be checked at some point.
You can try to research the different coats/jackets/pants that you have by their brand names, and check the frequency of occurrence of shatnez. If this is not possible, you can send in coats and jackets for a basic search, meaning to check only those parts of the garments that often have shatnez.
Best wishes.
