Curling Peyos on Shabbos

May one wet and curl peyos on Shabbos? Are there issurim of sechita, binyan, and tearing out hair involved?

Answer:

The main problem of curling peyos on Shabbos is binyan.

It is in general forbidden to brush one’s hair, including peyos, on Shabbos, because hair is pulled out, but it is permitted to use a gentle brush that doesn’t pull out hairs (and which is designated for Shabbos use), or to use one’s fingers (see Shulchan Aruch 303:27; Mishnah Berurah 87; Shemiras Shabbos 14:44).

However, curling peyos is a problem of boneh, but if there are already curled and one is only adding and perfecting their shape, it is permitted (Me’or Ha-Shabbos Vol. 2, letter 32, citing from Rav Shlomo Zalman zt”l; see also Orchos Shabbos Vol. 1, no. 17, sec. 10-15).

Best wishes.

  1. What is the correct way to curl a child’s peyos on Shabbos, if peyos are no longer curly by morning?
