Question:
Can I perform in non Jewish venues and practice my songs during the nine days. I write music that appeals to a non religious and non Jewish audience. I’d like to continue playing on the streets and subways for tips also. Thanks
Answer:
It is hard to make out swhat you intentions are when you play for the non Jews, so here are the guidelines. It is permitted to play music when it is being done for the purpose of earning a livelihood, but not when it is done for pleasure. You have to be honest with yourself if the reason is because of hobby and because you like to practice playing the music or if it indeed not because of the pleasure of it, but for the livelihood and income involved.
Best Wishes
