I started building a side table for our home and have not yet finished it. It is not the 9 days leading up to Tisha B'av, and I have a bit more work to do. Am I permitted to work on this project during this period?

Yes, because it is not considered a home improvement, since it isn’t a part of your house, however you should not use it during the nine days.
