Birkas Kohanim

Question:

Reading this week’s article, I have a question if there is only one Kohen available shouldn’t the Chazan call up Kohen in the singular form instead of the plural Kohanim.

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

The reason why the gabbai says “Kohanim”, is because it says in the posuk “amor l’hem” tell them (to say Birkas Kohanim). This is interpreted that we have to tell them specifically when they are a “them” meaning more than just one. Therefore when there is only one kohen we don’t tell him in a singular term.

Best wishes
