Question:
Hi. Every year, before the Nine Days, I launder and iron all of my children’s clothing (ages 4-11). Since this is a huge job, I am wondering whether it would be permissible to do the ironing during the Nine Days? I understand that the prohibition is against wearing freshly laundered and ironed clothes; since the children are wearing those anyway, would it be allowed for the ironing to be done throughout the week? Also, is it permissible to iron clothes for Shabbos on Friday during the Nine Days or all of the ironing must be done before Rosh Chodesh? All information and insight is appreciated! Hello,
Although it is permitted to do laundry and wash children’s clothing during the nine days, this doesn’t mean that the halachos of not wearing freshly laundered clothing does not apply to children. Here are a few clarifications.
- The permission to lauder children clothing essentially applies to garments that young children will soil constantly. However, the clothing of older children may not be laundered during the nine days. The question is until what age this applies, and it is hard to give an exact age. There are different opinions among the poskim, and a number of poskim say that it is around age 6[1], (some say about 8). Additionally, if there is a need[2], one may wash the clothing if all children, before the actual week of Tisha B’av.
- The leniency of laundering does not extend itself to ironing[3].
- Additionally, children that are of age that they can understand the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash, (from about age 8) should also not[4] wear freshly laundered clothing, and they should also put on their already laundered clothing, before the nine days. Right now, it is already the nine days, so they can’t do this, but there are other options to cause their shirts and pants etc., to lose their fresh feeling, such as placing the clothing in the hamper for a few minutes, putting them on an unclean floor, putting the clothes on for a part of Shabbos, etc.
May Hashem bring Moshiach soon, so that these halachos will not be applicable next year.
