It is permitted for an avel to give presents that are in a way a social obligation, such as a baby or wedding present, because it considered like making a payment. The same would apply if the couple usually gives each other a birthday or anniversary present, and the spouse would be hurt if it wasn’t given. However, if the couple are not particular about such present and don’t always give them, then it shouldn’t be given.
