Question:
The ever popular, asking for a friend…..
My husband’s mother passed away a few weeks ago and he is just coming out of the sheloshem. Is it permissible for him to listen to prerecorded music, ie, the radio when he drives? We are on the road a great deal and while we listen to both the news and podcasts we also have prerecorded a play list.
Answer:
Hello,
The restriction for an avel not to listen to music during the mourning year applies to both live and recorded music. He may, however, listen to music when it is not done for pleasure but for a constructive purpose, such as when driving in order to keep himself awake.
Best wishes
