Igniting Stove on Yom Tov

There are some stoves that are ignited by pushing down a button to make a spark and turning another knob to put on the gas. Others work with a single knob that is turned and together makes the spark and puts on the gas. What is the din in regards to using this on yom tov? In a normal case one may take a flame and put it next to the gas in order that it should ignite which is ok. However what about in this case when a spark would be made as well when turning the knob for the gas. Is the fact that I also have the fire there enough to say that I don’t care about the spark being made and would be perhaps still be muter? What would be the reason why either way?

Answer:

It is not permitted to turn the knob if doing so makes a spark.

If turning the knob makes a spark, this is a clear prohibited melachah even for Yom Tov, and the presence of another fire does not make a difference.

The solution is to disconnect the electricity before Yom Tov, so that the gas turns on without any sparks.

Best wishes.
