Reward for Funding Sefer

Rav Pfeffer wrote that Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer writes that he agreed to share the spiritual reward due for the publication of his famous Sefer, Even HaAzel, with a donor who defrayed the publication costs. Now this is very interesting because the act of financing such a project is itself worthy of spiritual reward. So what additional reward did Rav Isser Zalman concede? It could not have been the Torah he had already learned because that as we have learned, may not be traded.

Answer:

Presumably, the reward in this case would be the reward for the dissemination of Torah that results from the sefer. This reward is generally shared between the author and the person paying for it, and I assume that Rav Isser Zalman was offering the author’s share of this.

Best wishes.
