The Letter K

Please, I would like to know if just having the letter “K” on a product without anything encircling it like a star, etc. means the product is kosher? I have found such a lettering on Welch’s grape juice and other juices and gelatin mixes. I have checked for symbols and found this on one list but not on any other. I didn’t know if that was a mistake. Could you please help me? Thank you.

Answer:

An unadorned letter K, being a simple letter of the alphabet, can be used by anyone who wants to claim his product is kosher.

It therefore cannot be relied upon as a kashrus certification. This requires a certified “trademark” of one of the kashrus authorities.

Best wishes.
