Taking Hoshanos from Aron Kodesh

Ever since I can remember the “Ha Shainess” branches have been tossed on the top of our Aaron Kodesh. Do the laws of Lulav apply to them? i.e.gift and ownership? We pay or make a donation when we collect our branches from the pile in the shul. The branches were removed from the top of the ark at the end of the service and taken for what seemed like use elsewhere. Should permission have been sought?
Should they have been returned?
Thanks. I look forward to your reply. It seems to me the aaron kodesh looks bare this year without them. We usually burn the chometz with them at Peasch.

Answer:

While it is likely that the hoshanos thrown on top of the Aron Kodesh are technically ownerless, in a shul were the custom is to keep them there after sukkos, one should certainly ask permission before removing them.
