Wishing Mazel tov

Question:

Why do we wish people Mazal Tov? Isn’t ein Mazel byisrael a fundamental concept in Judaism? (I’m aware that לאה was the first one who uttered this phrase according to one interpretation in rashi. But she wasn’t so much wishing it as she was stating a fact)

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

The meaning of Ein Mazel l’Yisrael does not mean the we don’t have mazal. We find many gemoros that talk about Jews and mazal. Rather the meaning of this is that Jew has the capability to rise above the mazalos, and to be led by Hashem, who isn’t bound to the nature of mazalos.

Best wishes

  1. Thank you very much for your reply. I understand that we have Mazel but can override it. My question is why are we wishing that to someone when they experience something good?

    1. We are in a way saying that we wish that tier child that was born, marriage etc., should be successful.
