Paintings on Shul Walls?

Question:

Many pre-war Shuls were adorned with very artistic paintings on walls. I have seen some in Europe, but even in Yerushalayim there are some with extensive paintings.  This seems to be against the words in Shulchan Aruch siman 90 seif 23. Pls clarify. Thank you

Answer:

Hello,

The Mishna Berura 90-71 writes that if the pictures are above the height of a person, that it is permitted in a shul.
