Although there are likely other reasons to refrain from doing so, if one speaks poorly about eretz yisrael does this fall under the general issur of speaking loshon hara? If so, can you provide a source? And if not, what would be the halachic reason not to?

Speaking derogatorily about Eretz Yisroel, i.e. the climate, mountains, is considered lashon hora. The source for this is from when the spies returned from their trip to Eretz Yisroel, and they spoke negatively about it, the posuk says {לו} והאנשים אשר שלח משה לתור את הארץ וישבו וילונו עליו את כל העדה להוציא דבה על הארץ: {לז} וימתו האנשים מוצאי דבת הארץ רעה במגפה לפני יקוק:. The Torah calls what they said motzei diba, which is another name for lashon hora, motzei shem ra. This is also brought in the midrash, see sources. Also see Midrash Rabba This is also Also see the sefer Yoshiv Moshe pg. 242, who says in the name of R’ Eliyashiv that this applies to things that are an integral part of Eretz Yisroel, such as the weather, the land etc.
