Question:
There are several different opinions by respected rabbis of saying Amen after hearing bracha on phone. I have a friend who is a shut in and wants to say the Amens badly so I was saying the morning blessings by phone, not easy to see her. Can I choose the lenient opinion and continue or is it a mistake?.

Hello,
Although there is controversy regarding being yotza things over the phone, such as havdalah etc., answering amen would be permitted. This is because one may answer amen if they know which bracha was said, even if they didn’t technically hear it. There was once a very large shul in Alexandria, and the people couldn’t hear when the chazzan finished a bracha, so someone used to raise a kerchief to let everyone know when they should answer amen. This situation is similar to that. Even if we will say that the person hearing the bracha is not hearing the person saying it, but still he does know which bracha is being said and he also knows exactly when to answer it, therefore it would be permitted.

וע’ בפסקי תשובות סימן רטו אות ג בשם מנחת שלמה ח”א ס’ ט’ ואם נמצא עם הציבור ושומע הברכה דרך רמקול, אם ללא הרמקול ג”כ היה שומע את המברך חייב לענות אמן, אך אם לולא הרמקול לא היה שומע את המברך יענה אמן אך אינו חיוב.
