Copying from CD to MP3

My daughter has music CD’s. Am I permitted to copy them on my MP3 to listen to them?

Answer:

If your daughter lives at home, it appears that this is permitted. A person is allowed to copy his own CDs to MP3, and I believe this will apply to other members of one household.

However, if your daugter does not live at home, copying to MP3 will probably involve a copyright violation. Many poskim write that copyright law applies even according to halachah, and although others dispute this assertion, it is better to avoid copyright violations.

This is the more true for music that is copyrighted by Jewish artists and producers.
