Maaser from inheritace

Question:

I recently inherited a large sum of money. I would like to give some of it to my married children. They are in kollel and live very simply. The idea of giving them money would be for them to have something to fall back on or help them marry off their children when the time comes (several years away). Can this be considered maaser ?

Answer:

It really depends if they are eligible to receive tzedakah or not. Usually kollel people are eligible to receive tzedakah as they usually don’t have a secure job, and a year’s worth of money in savings. Therefore, you would be allowed to give them this large sum. It would be noteworthy, that if the sum is indeed large, that might make them ineligible to receive other tzedakah money, because then they might be considered “wealthy”.

Best wishes
