The gemora that they saw is referring to what is called tevilas Ezra. This tevila is not an obligation, however it is a preference, as you write for tahara. There is no difference between if he person is single or married regarding this.
As a side point, from what you are writing, it sounds like some sort of aveiro has been committed here, going to the mikva will not serve as teshuva for what was done, rather to remove some of the tuma that was caused by the shichvas zera l’vatolo.
