Maaser to support own torah learning

Question:

Can one use saved up maaser money to support oneself to take off work to learn for a period of time full time?

Answer:

Hello,

The general rule regarding maaser money is that we do not use maaser money for personal mitzvos that we are obligated to do, such as buying an esrog, tzitzis, or tefillin. We are obligated to learn as much as we can, therefore it is considered a mitzva that is a personal obligation and we don’t use maser money for it. Maybe it is possible to use other monies for this, even if it is only for a period of time, it is a tremendous zechus for you.

Best wishes
