I’m in 2nd year of back to back aveilus for my parents. I understand that we are meikel in allowing Aveilim to attend their usual purim seuda even if there is music. I would like to know if the Avel himself is allowed to play an instrument on purim if they generally do. (not for parnassah purposes)

While I am not aware of difference regarding these halachos between a back to back avilus or not, (this idea is mentioned regarding haircuts etc., during Bein Hamitzarim or Chol Hamoed, but not regarding simcha during the year) let’s focus on the actual halacha. There is controversy about this, however there are poskim who say that on Purim, since there is a mitzva to eat the Purim Seuda and to be b’simcha, that it is permitted.
