Hafrasha Challah (separating Challah)?

Ha Rav, 4?s:

1. My wife used to make challah but because of the bug situation is she still obligated to do so?
2. Since the bakeries here are Jewish, can we rely on them instead?
3. We are older now and need a bug light to check which we could not find here in Yirushalyim (we looked in (Geula only). Are we still obligated in Hafrashat Challah?

Hello,

1. I am not aware of the bug situation that you are referring to, but even if there was an issue, nowadays there are a number of companies in Eretz Yisroel that sell pre-sifted, bug free flour. Therefore, this should not be an issue.
2. The idea of baking challah is for two reasons. The first one is that it is kavod for Shabbos for the person to make their own challos, and to put in the effort for the honor of Hashem’s special day. When buying from a bakery, we will have challis, but we won’t have the mitzva of putting effort, which shows that Shabbos is special to us. The second reason is in order to perform the mitzva of hafrashas challah. The gemora says that the mitzva of separating challah is one of the three special mitzvos of women, and they come to atone for the sin of Chava which was done on erev Shabbos, therefore it is a good thing for her to sperate challah on erev Shabbos. (If this is too hard it is still better to do it on Thursday etc., then buying challos). When buying challos from a bakery, they are the ones who did the mitzva, not us. If the bakery has a good hechsher we can rely on them that they did separate challah, but nevertheless the mitzva was done by them, not by us.
3. Having said all of this, for a woman to make her own challah, yes, it is definitely a preference, and a mitzva. But if it is too hard on her, or if it is going to make her tense, and cause shalom bayis issues, especially on a short winter Friday, then it would be better to buy it in a bakery.
