Clean nails and washing in the morning

Question:

How careful does one need to be regarding cleanliness under nails when washing hands to remove ruach rah in the morning? Especially with children who often have a lot of dirt under their nails. Is it necessary to keep their nails very clean for this reason?

Answer:

Hello,

The Shulchan Aruch writes that it is preferable l’chatchila to be careful not to have a chatzitza on one’s hands when washing in the morning, however it is not mandatory. The Mishna Berura writes that when possible one should be careful about this. You would want your children’s hands to be clean, but you don’t have to get nervous with them over this. You can mention it to them without making an issue over it, as being overly careful with such things can backfire in the long run.

Best wishes
