Do I need to put a tablecloth on my Shabbos table, or can I use individual placemats?

There is an idea brought in the Shulchan Aruch that the table in our homes should be covered with a tablecloth.. In fact, the tablecloth should stay on the table not only during the meal, but for the whole Shabbos, as this is included in the honor of Shabbos. This idea extends to the degree that there were poskim who were carful not to “expose” the table even for a short while. For example, if a person has crumbs on the table and the person wants to shake the crumbs off outside, that before Shabbos they should put two tablecloths on the table, so that when the upper one will be shaken off the lower one will still be covering the table! Therefore although placemats can be very elegant, it should be a tablecloth and not just placemats.
