Question:
Hi! After getting an Aliyah, we remain standing at the bimah during the next aliyah. Is this a minhag? A requirement? How long should one stay there? Can one leave if he has a need to?
Thanks
Answer:
Thank you for your question.
The main idea of waiting after getting an aliya is not to leave the sefer torah by itself, therefore the minhag is to wait until the next person makes the bracha. Most people however wait until after the next person’s aliya because if the person is walking back to his seat during the reading, he might not hear everything the baal koreh is saying, therefore the common practice is indeed to wait until then end of the next aliya. If you need to leave you can do after the next person gets to the bimah.
Best wishes
